U15 Winners!
Posted by Eversholt Cricket Club on 3 July 2016
Eversholt CC U15 and Luton Town & Indians CC U15 met in the County Final, on a bright and breezy evening at the picturesque Ickwell Cricket Club.
The pitch played well despite the previous two weeks of heavy rain, with huge thanks to the ground-staff and all at the club for getting the game on.
Experienced Umpires, Paul Barnes & Bob Browning, sensibly determined with dark clouds and rain still possible that the game should be 18-overs-a-side. LTI&CC won the toss and put Eversholt into bat, Danyaal Malik and Skipper Ross Denton opened with fast running and stylish stroke play.
Denton (16) was bowled by one that kept a touch low, bringing Alex Rennie to the crease.
Malik & Rennie piled on the runs with a 60-partnership in 9-overs, when match top-scorer Malik was unfortunately run-out for 48 chasing a second. Rennie continued his fine form supported by Peter Barrington, the pair adding 26 in the next 3-overs. Rennie (44) was then caught & bowled by the pick of LT&ICC’s bowlers Aaron Singh (3-0-25-2). Barrington (12 n.o.) & Cam Melly (8) completed the Eversholt innings of 134, which looked to be a very good total.
LT&ICC opened their reply with Captain, Fayaz Homyoon and Keeper, Sharib Riaz.
A keen opening contest between them and ECC opening bowlers Denton & Rennie ensued, ECC fielding very well as a unit. ECC then brought on the pace of Barrington and spin of Callum Robertson. The batting pair continued to build a steady partnership of 54 in 9-overs; but LT&ICC were well behind the required run-rate.
Then came the pivotal 10th over. Homyoon was stumped by ECC’s effervescent keeper Rowan Bascetta-Pollitt off Robertson’s 1st ball of the over. Bascetta-Pollitt then ran-out No.3 Darmesh Mistry as he hurried to get off the mark, with an impressive gloved direct-hit on ball 4. Then Robertson delivered the coup-de-gras bowling Riaz with the 5th.
That effectively sealed the contest; the required run-rate was climbing and LT&ICC’s lower order were pinned down by ECC’s tight teamwork.
Robertson finished his spell with another maiden to end with match-winning figures of 4-2-14-2.
Eversholt U15 now continue on to face the Northants/Hunts play-off winners in the National Stages of the competition.
